Does Drying Digestate Really Pay?

Perry Belt Dryer

Drying anaerobic digestate is nothing new, but can you really save money or even make money from doing it? The British Government has now excluded digestate from the RHI scheme, which is a shame, but it doesn’t mean that drying digestate can’t be profitable for both the producer and the environment.

By drying digestate you will see significant reductions in the cost of both transporting it & storing it. If you are using the dried digestate as an organic fertiliser or as compost, the dried substrates can be transported more cost-effectively and then spread on fields at larger distances from the initial plant at a reduced cost. With the Perry Belt Drier, you can even use residual heat that would otherwise have been wasted to dry the digestate, saving you additional fuel costs and keeping your carbon footprint to a minimum.

Dried digestate has other uses, uses that can bring you additional revenue. Digestate is very easy to pelletize or briquette, the pellets or briquettes are good quality biomass fuels with a high calorific content. Allowing you to sell the final product on to people with biomass fuel systems, or use the product yourself, yet again saving you money. Another popular use for dried digestate is animal bedding, using the dried digestate is often less odorous and more cost-effective.

Perry’s modular designed Belt Drier has proven to be ideal for drying digestate & many other materials including woodchip, grass, cereals & grain, paper pulp and much more!
